La Motte is a wine estate situated just outside Franschhoek in the Western Cape. I was there for lunch recently and what a surprise to come across this beautiful old wagon, which was on display in their gardens. It is obviously very old, but still, in very good condition, the timber bleached almost white and the cracks giving it a mystical appearance. Ingrid who is in charge of the museum at Le Motte was able to tell me that this wagon was imported from Hungary; and that it was used for transporting grapes in that country. Probably the only one of its kind in South Africa, I hope Ingrid can get it under cover, in order to preserve it. The manicured green lawn of La Motte where the wagon is presently standing was dispensed with and I painted it in a setting that I thought was more appropriate.
